There's a First Time for Everything

Today I have:
-wiped applesauce off the computer monitor,
-pulled a popsicle stick out of my bed,
and
-pulled a half-eaten lollipop out of the recycle bin.

They didn't teach me about these things in Child Development classes. Now, I can find my way around Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs or Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development, but how do I teach my 3 year-old son to aim?

Very Good Good Friday

We went to my aunt and uncle's house for Good Friday. My not-much-younger-cousin is there as well, and they are all very much in preschooler mode, since my cousin (not the one who was there) has a 2 1/2 year-old daughter. And they also love babies!

My aunt had the table decorated for a nice lunch; it was so festive! She also had hidden easter eggs for SK to have his very own private egg hunt.

Turned out, 2/3 of them had % off coupons in them, as she had used them in her Mary Kay classes. He thought they were fortunes, and pretended to read them out loud. He was excited that he got fortunes in his eggs!

My cousin has a yellow lab, and they explored the drainage ditch for a little bit. Boy, that water was tempting. Oh, to be a pup and jump right in!

Courageous woman that she is, she also got an egg-dyeing kit with bug stickers for him.

They did it together, he had more fun, and it was not a big mess at all. I was impressed.

And the best part? Eating eggs!

They live next to the golf course, so a golf-cart ride was in order. I think the mission was to feed some ducks, but they never saw any. I don't think that diminished the excitement of the event at all, though.

And as if this all were not enough, she had made a chocolate cake. This incited one of his more common expressions these days, "May I please NEED this?"

We enjoyed them, and I think they enjoyed us. I was tired though, and so were my boys. SK, smeared with BBQ sauce, grass stains, orange dye, and icing, fell asleep before we got to the city limits.

At the time I started this entry, I added to the running total- 3.2 miles wheels, 1.5 miles on foot. Can't remember now what day that was...

Small Talk

SK plops down beside me on the couch. He crosses his legs, clasps his hands, and cheerily asks me, "So, what's your favorite book?"

He has become quite the conversationalist.

Other small talk of late includes, "It's a nice day," and "So, what's your favorite movie?" We've had some nice visits start out this way.

When he's finished with a phone conversation, he says, "Well, I have to let you go. Bye." And yet, said conversation is only over when he deems it so, and it has become increasingly difficult to pry the phone from his hands. He reminds us more than a little bit of a cousin from Colorado (Hi A!) who used to do the same thing when she was his age.

I include the photo to let you in on what stylish 3 year-old construction workers are sporting this season. Yes, he dressed himself.

Running Total

SIL had a good idea, which is for me to keep track of my training progress on this here blog. (Pun in the title intended. Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Oh, sorry, some of you may not know what I'm talking about. I sent out an email to some family members, more or less announcing that I'm going to compete in a triathlon. Someday. I am too far out of shape right now to be able to gauge when I'll be ready, so it's still a dream.

But a dream, nonetheless, that already has me powering through the hill training programs harder and faster, with a smile on my face.

So the total beginning yesterday stands at 3.1 miles, on wheels.

Shhh

It's naptime, and I'm giddy about it.

Awwww...

Aren't they cute?

Do you have your ticket?

So we had all just awoken this morning and KiSA remarked, "I think I see snow outside." SK ran to get his rubber boots and cried, "I need to get on the train!"

It's the first time he's seen snow since Polar Express came into his schema. Thus, in his understanding, if there's snow, then there must be a magic train just outside.

I felt truly sad to have to tell him that no, a train track did not magically appear in our front yard overnight. A little bit of wonder died.

But then we got outside. What they don't tell you in the movies, son, is that snow is cold.

Therefore, we were only outside for a quarter of the time it took us to bundle up beforehand, say, four minutes? But it was still exciting, and novel and memorable. I made him a warm sweet bowl of Malt-o-meal, and that made his painfully cold hands feel better.

That he went and got his boots by himself, and didn't even think to ask me to do it for him, well, it got to me. It's good though, just one more little way that he is growing up.

As for RnT, it was just one more instance of mom making him uncomfortable just so he'd look cute. After all the fuss died down, he needed a drink.

My Funny Valentine

On Valentine's Day, we decided to be original and go out to dinner. It was out first real date since RnT was born--two months! We were excited.

Oh, how I fussed over which shirt I was going to wear.

Our wonderful babysitter (Hey there, A!) showed up, I topped off the baby with the hollow leg, and we skedaddled. The clock was ticking though, as I didn't want to be in the middle of dinner when she called and said he was hungry again. We had a gift card to Chili's, but the wait there was 45 minutes. As we stood on the sidewalk discussing how we probably shouldn't be standing under the tree full of birds, it happened. Yup, the kind of thing that suddenly makes which blouse you're wearing irrelevant. The kind of thing where you offer the bird some toilet paper.

I almost said, "Forget it. Let's go home and eat sandwiches." But we persisted, determined to HAVE FUN, doggone it. We ended up going to an asian buffet, which we had already gone to earlier in the week. This time, though, I got to eat my food while it was still hot. Nice, very nice. The best thing about the evening? It was quiet. We were together. For our eleventh Valentine's Day together, I think we did pretty good.

Two Months

Here is RnT at two months- Valentine's Day! Happy Birthday, sweetie!

SK saw that I was taking pictures, and decided to get in on the modeling scene. Then, he discovered that the picture bear played music. RnT is already fascinated by his big brother's voice and incessant activity; that he could produce such amazing music was icing on the cake.
