It's the first time he's seen snow since Polar Express came into his schema. Thus, in his understanding, if there's snow, then there must be a magic train just outside.

I felt truly sad to have to tell him that no, a train track did not magically appear in our front yard overnight. A little bit of wonder died.

But then we got outside. What they don't tell you in the movies, son, is that snow is cold.

Therefore, we were only outside for a quarter of the time it took us to bundle up beforehand, say, four minutes? But it was still exciting, and novel and memorable. I made him a warm sweet bowl of Malt-o-meal, and that made his painfully cold hands feel better.

That he went and got his boots by himself, and didn't even think to ask me to do it for him, well, it got to me. It's good though, just one more little way that he is growing up.
As for RnT, it was just one more instance of mom making him uncomfortable just so he'd look cute. After all the fuss died down, he needed a drink.
